Generally:
• Mild GERD: With appropriate lifestyle changes (diet modification, weight loss, avoiding triggers) and over-the-counter medications (antacids, H2 blockers), symptoms can improve within a few days to weeks.
• Moderate to Severe GERD: May require prescription medications such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and could take several weeks to months to see significant improvement. Continuous treatment for 8 weeks is often recommended.
• Chronic GERD: Might need long-term management, and while symptoms can be controlled, complete normalization may take longer and in some cases, lifelong treatment may be necessary.
It can resolve with time and proper lifestyle changes, particularly dietary changes. Reduction of tea/coffee/spicy foods can help.
Meanwhile you can continue medicines. PPIs and H2 blockers are very safe medicines.
