Many times an MRI shows strain, while infact the ligament may be torn/ non functional. Only a clinical examination will be helpful in determining if indeed the ligament is not present. Treatment depends on your activity level and symptoms.

Incomplete ACL tears  should be given a chance  to heal by conservative treatment. Above knee cast for 3-4wk.along with anti inflammatory & antioxidants followed by physiotherapy  usually help.

In case of incomplete tears and sprains, the surgery is dictated by clinical examination. Full thickness tears will usually require surgery depending on your lifestyle. You will walk in a day but it will take about a year for complete rehabilitation after the surgery.
