Frequent cold cough followed by Wheezing
Hello everyone!!! My 2.5 year old has been getting cold and cough every month. It takes 18-20 days to completely get recovered and then in a week he catches cold again. We stay in Bangalore. It has started since he was 8 months old. He was given nebulization for 1 year and then inhalers. When he was 1 year 5 months old, i.e from June 2024, I started Budecort Inhalers 3 weeks and then Levolin whenever he had severe wheezing. But then still hus cold cough repeated every month. So switched to Ayurveda treatments. He got better. Didnt get cold and cough in November and december 2024. But now again im 2025 since January till June end he got 3 times and each time it took 18-20 days to completely recover. He started pre school from April. May be that is why he is getting effected ? I see this happening because of climate change also. Is it normal? Which doctor should I consult in such case ? Any suggestions? Weight - 13 kgs

Hello, I understand your concern It’s common for toddlers (especially after starting playschool) to have 6–8 episodes of cold and cough per year, especially in the first 1–2 years of social exposure. Each episode may last 10–14 days, and recovery followed by re-infection is expected, especially with climate changes and exposure to peers. Common causes include: Viral respiratory infections (most common in this age group) Allergic tendencies or early childhood asthma (especially if wheezing or family history is present) Post-viral airway hyperreactivity Environmental triggers (pollution, dust, weather, school exposure) Immune immaturity (still developing in this age group) Weight is 13 kg, which is appropriate for age (suggests nutrition and growth are fine). No mention of hospitalization, poor weight gain, or severe distress — mild to moderate infections are more likely.
Next Steps
Budesonide (Budecort) is a preventive inhaled steroid used for recurrent wheeze. Levolin is a reliever. Using it only during wheezing is appropriate. If symptoms are frequent, a pulmonologist or pediatric allergist may re-evaluate the need for long-term inhaled therapy.
Health Tips
Avoid dust, incense sticks, perfumes, smoke, and cold air exposure. Keep home well-ventilated and dust-free. Ensure balanced diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and fluids. Adequate sleep and physical activity are important. Consider Vitamin D supplementation if advised by the doctor. Red flags: Poor weight gain No symptom-free periods between infections Breathing difficulty, chest retractions Persistent fever or cough beyond 3 weeks

Younger children have smaller airways than older ones. As the child grows, airways too grow and the wheezing typically slowly reduces and they grow out of the condition Now, the wheezing can be secondary of benign viral infections or due to allergies. Bangalore weather can be highly allergenic because of the heavy flora as well as perennial rainfall. You are right about the school infections - they are a cause of repeat precipitation of wheezing. You can take the following measures: Vaccinate for influenza Use air purifier- a good one with hepa filter- in his bedroom. It will significantly reduce his allergen load Test for food and environmental allergies and try to look for potential causes Stick to a good paediatrician. Discuss if a 6 monthly course of monteleukast will be helpful He should finish dinner early - at least 2 hours before sleep. Reflux is common in such children and aggravates the condition Avoid Ayurvedic medicine for children - we are concerned about heavy metals in them and unknown side effects
