What is flat feet in children?
Flat feet (also called pes planus) occurs when the arches of the feet are flattened, causing the soles to touch the floor completely.
It's common in young children, as the arches are still developing.
Most children outgrow flat feet by around age 6 to 7, as their muscles and ligaments strengthen.
Key points to consider for a 7-year-old:
Flexible vs. Rigid Flat Feet
Flexible flat feet: Arch appears when standing on tiptoes or sitting; usually not painful.
Rigid flat feet: Arch does not appear, even when standing on tiptoes; may be associated with stiffness or pain.
Symptoms to Watch For
Pain in the feet, ankles, or lower legs.
Difficulty in running, walking long distances, or playing sports.
Uneven shoe wear or tripping frequently.
When to Seek Medical Advice
If flat feet are painful or causing discomfort.
If there’s a rigid, stiff foot with no arch, or if it’s asymmetric.
If the child is developing problems with walking or balance.
Management Options
Reassurance: Most flexible flat feet do not need treatment.
Supportive shoes: Well-fitting shoes with good arch support.
Exercises: Foot strengthening exercises, heel raises.
Orthotics: Custom insoles may be recommended if there’s discomfort
