Eye power in 18 months old baby
My daughter is 18 months old and we recently observed she get teary eyes while watching tv even for 5-10 mins. Hence we visited paediatric eye specialist, doc said that my daughter might have tear duct blockage due to which tears come and she also checked her eye power. By checking from machine and lenses, doc said my daughter has cylindrical power less that 1 or so and asked us to come for dilated procedure and also said that babies eyes are not developed completely upto age 2. So we need to do this dilation procedure again after 6 months . My concern here is if she is saying that 6 more months would take my daughters eyes to completely develop why should we do dilation test now ?

One can wait for refraction when the power is small. Eye develops over a period of time. Upto 10 years of age there are changes in the front portion mainly and from 10 years to about 18 years the eye ball lengthens. Parents are generally very pushy and doctors do not want to face any liability that is the reason refraction is advised. Tear duct blockage should be handled when there is no runny nose or respiratory infection. You may discuss with your treating doctor in detail to know all the pros and cons.

Hello dear, I know u r concerned about your baby. Dilation is required to make sure that there is no alarming power in your baby's eyes.. usually every eye specialist does that whenever u approach them for any issues. This is a small procedure and does not harm the baby. Without dilation, correct power cannot be confirmed. Rest other causes of watering is allergy of eyes(seen after 2 years) and blocked tear duct.
Next Steps
follow up with doctor and talk in detail of all concerns. I'm sure she will understand .
