Firstly, weight loss in the context of medicine or physical fitness refers to a reduction of the total body mass, due to a mean loss of fluid, body fat or lean mass, namely bone mineral deposits, muscle, tendon and other connective tissue. Now before speaking as to what weight loss looks like, it is important to understand that every person has unique genetic traits, that is weight loss in one person may appear different when compared to others hence every aspect of weight loss must be applied against your knowledge of your own constitution, metabolism, and genetic makeup. There are several factors which can fluctuate body weight such as Water composition Muscle mass Bone weight and Fat. Hence losing weight does not necessarily mean losing fat, one can lose muscle mass or water and weigh less in relation to the past. This makes a huge difference when we speak as to what weight loss looks like.In simple words, your body weight does not indicate your body composition hence weight loss must not be judged by a decrease in ones weight but rather a decrease in muscle mass, water composition, bone weight and most importantly fat. Exercise on one hand helps reduce water weight temporarily and can show a significant decrease in weight over a short period of time but this does not indicate weight loss, on the contrary a diet rich in salt can lead to an increase in weight due to water retention, hence to determine weight loss, recurrent checks on a weighing scale for a period of at least a month is necessary to be accurate. The first indicator would be a decrease in measurements like waist size as this is the most accurate indicator of a decrease in weight. You might feel better about yourself because of an increase in confidence and endorphin levels, but this is not always true. Other signs of weight loss could include excess skin ==> If you’ve lost a certain amount of weight, you’re likely to be faced with a very-real physical reminder of its disappearance: sagging,stretch-marked skin. I hope this answers your question.
