Dental fillings and anaesthesia
I had to have some smooth surface cavities filled and the drilling process was quite painful. I was unprepared for this. Why do dentists here in India not use local anaesthesia or numbing gel for the filling procedures?

Good question. So here pain and sensitivity are two terms to be taken differently. Considering your thing regarding cavities and fillings, i consider it by default that its not a deep cavity. So we a dentist cuts through enamel and dentin, you would feel mild sensitivity which can be swallowed as pain by some patients, mild sensitivity by some patients. So basically it depends on the pain threshold of the patient on how he or she feels. Secondly, if the dentist is too rough or fast in giving motion to the bur, obviously more sensitivity can be felt which patient receives as pain. Moral- if one cant tolerate the sensitivity, its the dentist's job to give anesthesia and carry on.

Hello If the cavities are shallow, local anesthesia is not required for their drilling and filling. But yes, if the cavity is deep, the dentist always informs the patient and according to the patient's comfort and pain threshold, anesthesia can be given to properly remove the decay.
