My daughter is 1 year 8 months old. She has achieved all the milestones in proper time except speech. She is able to respond to the call and play with the educational toys. Sometimes she will imitate what we say. Rarely, she will utter a few words. Most of the time she will be making gibberish sounds. She is more actively involved in running around, climbing the furniture. She always likes to go outside of the house to roam around. Is it normal? What should we do to make her speak?

Hope she had a hearing test performed at birth. Hope the child responds to her name, how is her response to calls made by you and simple instructions? Monitor these cues
Next Steps
Please get her hearing tested - audiometry - if there is any doubt. This is an age of rapid development of language and all efforts should be made to secure it
Health Tips
Encourage her to speak out single words of common use. Read simple word books with her. Show her objects and name them. If the child makes efforts, encourage her. Remember, even Einstein didn’t speak till 3 years of age - her mother had great faith in him!
