Help alleviate calf muscle pain with a home diet rich in calcium (dairy, leafy greens), vitamin D (fortified dairy, sunlight), magnesium (nuts, seeds), and potassium (bananas, avocados).
Calf muscle pain is common in his age group.Ask him to drink adequate amounts of water, apply warm compress whenever he gets pain.Give him magnesium 300 mg once daily for a few weeks. In addition vitamin E 400 may help as well.
I’m sorry to hear about your son’s ongoing discomfort. It sounds like his calf muscle pain is quite troubling, especially since it occurs at night. Here are a few potential causes and considerations based on what you’ve described:
Growing Pains: These are common in children aged 3 to 12 and typically occur at night. They can cause intermittent pain in the legs, including the calves1.
Muscle Strain: Even though your son is active and doesn’t experience pain during activities, muscle strain can still occur. This might be due to overuse or not warming up properly before physical activities2.
Low Calcium Levels: The pediatrician’s recommendation of calcium supplements suggests that low calcium levels might be contributing to his muscle pain. Ensuring he gets enough calcium and vitamin D can help alleviate these symptoms2.
Viral Myositis: This is a rare condition that can cause muscle inflammation and pain, often following a viral infection. It typically affects the calf muscles and can cause significant discomfort3.
Since your paediatrician has already recommended calcium supplements, it’s important to follow that advice and monitor any changes. If the pain persists or worsens, it might be worth discussing further tests or evaluations with me to rule out other conditions.
How has your son been responding to the calcium supplements so far?
