Bulge disc and herniated disc are just technical terms sometimes used loosely and interchangeably. In the strictest technical terms, BULGE is something that is visible like a bump - something seen protruding beyond its natural surface or confines. HERNIATION, on the other hand, is a process by which something comes out of its natural confines by force. There are various grades of disc bulge. The mildest of these would be just making a dent on the space around the nerves (The nerves in spine are covered by a layer of fluid called CSF and this space - subarachnoid space, is encased by a papery layer called dura). As the bulge progresses, it can progressively compress the nerves and injure them. So you are in the early stages of disc bulge. If you don't take appropriate precautions, it may worsen.
