Retainers are to be worn as soon as the braces are removed. Except for a few cases of permanent retention, upto 1 year is the recommended period to wear the retainer. Even after a year it is recommended that you atleast wear the retainer at night atleast after that.

Hello
Well, mostly retainers are given soon after the braces treatment is over. The duration is more or less equal to the duration of the braces treatment.
But all this also varies from patient to patient
Ideally retainers should be placed before removing braces or immediately as soon as braces are removed as the chances of relapse to initial tooth position is more in first few days of braces removal . And retainers should be worn for at least one to one n half years after removing braces.
Next Steps
Patient should wear the retainer as per the advice of your Orthodontist to prevent any kind of relapse .
Health Tips
Be in contact with your Orthodontist until you complete your retention phase.
