BERA test failed for 2 month 12 days old
My 2 month and 12 days old son failed his OAE test twice, once 2 days after birth and then at 2 months. We then went for BERA test which shows bilateral severe to profound loss. My son was awake and moving during both OAE tests and there was some background noise during the BERA test. He reacts to some loud noises like clapping but not to bells or doorbells. With clapping, he blinks/reacts but doesn't turn towards the source of the noise. Doc suggests repeating BERA after 2 months. What are the chances that 2nd BERA could yield different results and do we need to wait for another 2 months to repeat the test? His ears have not been physically examined at any stage and we have noticed yellow earwax coming out of his ears. We have not consulted any ENT yet. Also, do ears and hearing develop completely by birth or it takes 3-4 months to develop completely (as we have received contradictory information from different doctors regarding this). Please advice urgently as we are very anxious.

The hearing develops even before the birth, so the OAE test that is done at birth are used to rule out any sensorineural hearing loss. There are many factors that can give the test test fail so if a test comes fail, we have to redo the test at two months and six months, the best would be BERA test. Get your child’s ear tested with an ENT surgeon to rule out any local causes that can cause hearing loss. The audiologist would be able to do behavior audiometry, testing, probably from the age of six and above.
