Baby on Lactulose Not Pooping Daily
My 5-month-old breastfed baby has been on lactulose for 2 months. She sometimes goes 3–4 days without pooping but seems fine. Does she need to poop daily on lactulose, and how long is it safe to keep giving it?

It’s understandable to be concerned about your baby’s bowel habits, especially with long-term laxative use. Here’s what you need to know: ⸻ ✅ 1. Normal Poop Frequency in Breastfed Babies: • After 6 weeks of age, breastfed babies can go up to 3–5 days without pooping, and it can still be normal if: • The baby is comfortable • No vomiting or excessive straining • The stool is soft when passed So, 3–4 days without poop is not abnormal for a 5-month-old if she seems well and is gaining weight. ⸻
Next Steps
✅ Final Advice: • No, your baby doesn’t need to poop daily on lactulose if she is well, content, and stools are soft. • Discuss with your pediatrician about tapering off lactulose soon, as long-term use is not usually needed at this age. • Focus on hydration and gentle tummy massage. Once solids start at 6 months, poop frequency may change again.

It is quite common for newborns to go on without pooping for 2-3 days and to go 2-3 times a day… both are normal…since the baby has completed 5 months complementary feeds can be started next month and that shall be helpful…. Please don’t use lactulose for long period unless there are associated abnormalities If the tummy is hard…. Use colic aid drops 0.5ml twice a day for 2 days

First of all, avoid lactulose in a 5 month old baby. Secondly, please state why lactulose had been started, thirdly if the baby is passing stools every 3-4 days, but the stools are not hard and no straining is required at the time of defecation then no medication is required as it is considered completely normal.
