Are antidepressants really helpful
The average time that most patients suffer and get back to normal from depression is 6-12 months even if they don't take any meds. If it takes more than that then even meds can't help patients in recovering completely. If this is so then what's the use of meds. I took them after 1 years and taking from 2 years without much improvement. Can't even stop coz it's making me severly dysfunctional. Why is this not told before treatment. This was told by many docs whom I asked. Is it really true?

Not sure where you get these statistics from but there are varied forms of depression and the treatment is according to the subtype. Not everyone with depression will become okay in 6-12mo with/without medicines. The fact that you have dysfunction when you suddenly stop medicines is evidence of the fact that the medicines are working. So please talk to your Psychiatrist.  If a certain class of anti depressants doesn't work, then you can be shifted to another class. Also, you should considering starting some form of therapy. If nothing works then theres other forms of treatment like rTMS, ECT etc
