Antinuclear antibodies are screening test for a group of autoimmune diseases. It basically indicates that body’s defence system is acting against its own cells. ANA positivity in presence of suggestive symptoms (like joint pains, frequent oral ulcers, rashes) may indicate an autoimmune disease which needs to be confirmed by clinical examination and further tests. Having said that, low titer ANA positivity (1:160 or less) can be frequently seen in healthy individuals in absence of any autoimmune disease.
