Rootcanal treatment is a safe procedure with no side effects. Usually a dentist suggests Rootcanal treatment for a tooth that has a decay affecting the core of the tooth and which cannot be cured using just normal fillings. If a direct filling is given for such deeply decayed tooth, that could lead to complications such as swelling and pain in the region. Namaskaram, Usually a root canal treatment is done to a deeply decayed tooth that involves infectious pulp (nerve tissue).This is a very common procedure in dentistry and can be done in one to maximum two sittings based on the level of infection.The dentist will remove the infected and exposed pulp using special instruments and clean the canals and fill them with medicated material( gutta-percha).You should be able to resume your normal routine the day after the procedure. The dentist will take a couple of X-rays to make sure that any infection is gone and then also replace the temporary filling with a permanent fillings(crowns).
