Had touched a street dog's forehead , there didn't seem any saliva on it , after that I didn't wash hands and directly ate food , i have a very tiny wound on tongue , the dog seemed fine on that day , it was excited to meet me , should I take vaccination for this case ? I am confused

There is nothing to worry as most of stray dogs are normal unless show clinical signs of being affected by Rabies virus. However for your satisfaction and peace of mind may please visit a rabies clinic for a proper counselling in this scenario. However nothing to get worried. Best wishes.

Rabies transmission facts: - Virus is in saliva/nerve tissue, not in skin or fur. -Transmission requires saliva/brain tissue to come in contact with broken skin or mucosa. - Touching intact skin or fur without saliva is not considered an exposure. Your scenario: - No bite, no scratch, no licking of wound. -Only touched fur → then ate food. Unless there was fresh saliva on fur that contaminated your food/wound, risk is extremely negligible. WHO categorization: Category I: Touching/feeding animals, licks on intact skin → No PEP (Post exposure Prophylaxis) needed. Category II: Minor scratches/abrasions without bleeding → Vaccination. Category III: Transdermal bite/scratch, licks on broken skin/mucosa → Vaccine + immunoglobulin. - Your case fits Category I (no PEP needed), since there was no direct saliva contact with wound/mucosa.

Next Steps

- Street dogs should be observed (if possible) for 10 days. If the dog remains healthy, rabies transmission is ruled out. If the dog dies then immediately visit a hospital.

- In India, where rabies is endemic, doctors sometimes give PEP on doubtful exposures to be absolutely safe. However, unnecessary vaccination leads to cost, anxiety, and side effects.

Hi the wound on tongue is it Pre existing, if so nothing to worry about. No recommendation to take vaccine Vaccine is recommended if Pre existing wound or skin break is contaminated with dog saliva. Always wash hands before eating.
