Rabies exposure

2026-05-16 04:49:09
Hi Doctors A stray dog passed by me from my back and I saw, though I was in a full sleeve pant and had not suspected anything that day but after a day I suspect there is a little superficial scratch on my leg without bleeding. I have completed 5 shots 3 years back and one booster dose as well 7 months back can I go for one booster dose this time as well is it safe, or do 2 shots or full course. I have also attached the scratch i observed. Please suggest... Thanks in anticipation for your help doctors.

You already took proper vaccination earlier, so please don’t panic 👍 From your history this sounds low risk, but rabies boosters are generally very safe if needed. Book a consultation with me once I’ll guide you properly on whether any booster is required or not.

. According to World Health Organization (WHO) and national guidelines, a previously fully vaccinated individual never requires a full 5-dose course or Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG), regardless of how recently they were boosted. A simple, standard short booster protocol is all that is required to instantly wake up your antibodies and guarantee 100% protection."
Next Steps
The 2-Dose Booster Regimen: "You need to get a standard 2-dose booster series of the Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV). The first shot is taken on Day 0 (as soon as possible) and the second shot on Day 3. Taking these two doses is completely safe, has no negative interactions with your previous shots, and ensures absolute medical safety." Immediate Local Wound Care: "If you haven't already done so, wash the scratch area thoroughly under running tap water with regular soap for at least 15 minutes. Local cleansing is highly effective at mechanically removing any viral particles from the skin surface." No Immunoglobulin Required: "Please note that you do not need Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) infiltration around the scratch site, as your body is already fully capable of producing its own defensive antibodies rapidly."
Health Tips
To formally log your Day 0 and Day 3 booster timelines and clear any lingering anxiety regarding the dog encounter, please book a full consultation session via my Practo profile."

Greetings. Hope you are alright. I firstly appreciate your awareness on Rabies prevention. It good you are seeking medical advice. So with the vaccination history you have shared and the depth of the wound as seen, you dont have to get a booster dose. Any animal bite or scratch may get infected. So kindly maintain proper hygiene and observe the area for any colour changes / swelling / Pus or watery discharge. If any of such changes occur, please visit a nearby hospital. You can contact me through a consultation for further information. Take care.
Next Steps
Observe the localised injury, maintain clean surface.

It’s just superficial abrasion so you don’t need to worry. Just wash the wound properly with soap and take 3 doses of Anti-rabies. No need to take any antibiotics or booster dose.
Next Steps
Wash the wound with soap

Already answered.  Why don't  u forgot about  vaccine  before three years?  One course protect only one year. One booster dose no value. If its superficial  scratch  or any doubt  even  on that basis go for  vaccine.

The skin is intact, you should have washed it with soap water hence less likely need of ARV
