Hello,
I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician (Ex Govt Medical Officer at RML Hospital, New Delhi), and your case has been allotted to me.
Thank you for sharing your concern. A cough persisting for 2 months needs proper evaluation rather than repeated courses of antibiotics or cough syrup. Since azithromycin provided temporary relief but the cough has returned, an underlying cause may still be present. Common causes include post viral cough, allergy or post nasal drip, asthma, acid reflux and, depending on symptoms and risk factors, infections such as tuberculosis.
What you should do now
⢠Avoid taking another antibiotic without medical evaluation.
⢠Since the cough has persisted for around 8 weeks, a chest X ray and clinical examination are reasonable, with spirometry if asthma is suspected.
⢠Continue adequate hydration and avoid smoke, dust, perfumes and other obvious triggers.
⢠Grinlinctus may provide symptomatic relief, but it will not treat the underlying cause if one is present.
Consult a doctor promptly if
⢠Blood in sputum
⢠Breathlessness or chest pain
⢠Persistent fever or night sweats
⢠Unexplained weight loss
⢠Recurrent vomiting or worsening symptoms
Please share her age, whether the cough is dry or with phlegm, any fever, wheezing, acidity, weight loss, smoking exposure and any previous chest X ray reports. This will help narrow down the cause.
For personalised one to one consultation, you can reach out to me directly on WhatsApp at 80762047 three eight.
Wishing her good health and a speedy recovery.
