The first thing is If you sleep on your back, your pillow should completely fill the space between your neck and the mattress. If you sleep on your side, try using a thicker pillow to keep your head in line with the rest of your body in this position. Whatever you do, don't place your pillow under your shoulders.
It's generally recommended to use a pillow if you sleep on your back or side. However, what's most important is that you feel comfortable and pain-free in bed. if you have neck or bavk pain, or if you have spine condition like scoliosis, sleeping without a pillow may be unsafe.
If you are a back sleeper, you should push your pillow down next to your shoulders but not lay your shoulders on the pillow. Your head should be level when it's on the pillow. Your ears should be in a parallel line with your shoulders. The pillow should not be so thick that your chin is tucked into your chest.
While choosing the pillow check out for the brand and its size depending on your neck and shoulder, it may be medium or large size pillows available.
Pillows are not just for your head and neck. Depending on your sleeping position, additional pillows can help keep your spine in the proper position. The pillow for your head should support the natural curve of your neck and be comfortable. A pillow that's too high can put your neck into a position that causes muscle strain on your back, neck, and shoulders. Choose a pillow that will keep the neck aligned with the chest and lower back. Your pillow should be adjustable to allow you to sleep in different positions. Replace your pillows every year or so.
