Hello
Retainers are very important especially in case of Spacing between the upper front two teeth. It is a common condition that requires PERMANENT RETENTION.
Space has to be closed completely before removing the braces and then usually removable and fixed retainers are given. Removable retainers are prescribed for 1 to 1 and half years and a small fixed retainer is attached to the back of your teeth that stays permanently.
According to what you have described that the spaces have not closed at all, and you have diligently worn your retainers, retainers cannot close the space now as they help only in retaining the tooth in that position and not space closure.
The small cut of the tissue that you described is a part of the treatment, nothing to worry
