Advice for depression
Hi Doctor, I feel my dad is suffering from depression. After he fell ill and was hospitalised for sometime due to his kidney stones, his business didn't perform well. So he had to close his business. However, he being a father of two daughters, who are well settled in their career, he does not seem to accept the fact that his health does not allow him to work anymore. He is diabetic too and has lost a lot of weight due to overthinking about his early retirement. He keeps forgetting things and is always lost in another world of his thoughts. He resists visiting doctors and does not take his diabetes medication on time, unless reminded of/forced to. Please suggest how can we help him overcome his depression. Thank you in advance for your time and advice.

Read carefully Neuroimaging or brain imaging is the use of various techniques to either directly or indirectly image the structure of the nervous system. It is a relatively new discipline within medicine, neuroscience, and psychology. Physicians who specialize in the performance and interpretation of neuroimaging in the clinical setting are neuroradiologists. Neuroimaging falls into two broad categories: 1.Structural imaging, which deals with the structure of the nervous system and the diagnosis of gross (large scale) intracranial disease (such as tumor) and injury. 2.Functional imaging, which is used to diagnose metabolic diseases and lesions on a finer scale (such as Alzheimer's disease / Dementia) and also for neurological and cognitive psychology research and building brain-computer interfaces. Neuropsychological assessment Neuropsychological assessment is a performance-based method to assess cognitive functioning. This method is used to examine the cognitive consequences of brain damage, brain disease, and severe mental illness. There are several specific uses of neuropsychological assessment, including collection of diagnostic information, differential diagnostic information, assessment of treatment response, and prediction of functional potential and functional recovery. We anticipate that clinical neuropsychological assessment will continue to be used, even in the face of advances in imaging technology, because it is already well known that the presence of significant brain changes can be associated with nearly normal cognitive functioning, while individuals with no lesions detectable on imaging can have substantial cognitive and functional limitations. Neuropsychological assessment was traditionally carried out to assess the extent of impairment to a particular skill and to attempt to determine the area of the brain which may have been damaged following brain injury or neurological illness. With the advent of neuroimaging techniques, location of space-occupying lesions can now be more accurately determined through this method, so the focus has now moved on to the assessment of cognition and behaviour, including examining the effects of any brain injury or neuropathological process that a person may have experienced. A core part of neuropsychological assessment is the administration of neuropsychological tests for the formal assessment of cognitive function, though neuropsychological testing is more than the administration and scoring of tests and screening tools. It is essential that neuropsychological assessment also include an evaluation of the person's mental status. This is especially true in assessment of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.  Aspects of cognitive functioning that are assessed typically include orientation, new-learning/memory, intelligence, language, visuoperception, and executive function. However, clinical neuropsychological assessment is more than this and also focuses on a person's psychological, personal, interpersonal and wider contextual circumstances.
