I wanted to take my child aged 6 years old to a psychiatrist for ruling out the concern of ADHD or hyperactivity as has bee raised by teachers and others . I wanted to have an idea how will they test my child? will it be based on my observations, experiences or a little interaction with the child or on the basis of some medical tests. Will there be any medication for the same and how safe it is?

Hello, the psychiatrists will first take a detailed history from you regarding your child. They will also interview the child and observe his behavior during the same. The class teacher's observation will also be taken into consideration. Based on all these reports, they will make a diagnosis. Not all kids will be put on medication initially. Depending on the severity of the problem, treatment will be suggested. It can be behavioral, pharmacological or both. Pharmacotherapy is very effective and safe for treatment of ADHD.
