My mother is suffering from acute knee pain for the past 8 years. And after a chain of consultations in Kochi we were asked to do the knee replacement surgery. Recently we heard about a new procedure : protein injection http://www.orthospinenews.com/the-single-protein-injuection-which-could-replace-the-need-for-knee-surgery-for-osteoarthritis-sufferers/. Kindly give a clarification of the same

By your description, patient is probably having osteoarthritis of knees. This is akin to wear and tear. Injections in the joint are of controversial value at best. That too only in early stages of disease. Injections usually have an effect which lasts only a few months. I will suggest not to get a feeling that injection will cure the disease.
In advanced stages, replacement is a very good and effective treatment
Next Steps
X ray of knee in standing position.

Take 2 opinions atleast. If u still are in doubt mail me pics of the patient as well as knee standing as view xrays
Just go for best physiotherapy treatment. It will work much better than anything. I have treated the number of patients suffering from OA knee of more than 10 years. Believe or not they can sit cross leg and have no pain.
Early osteoarthritis knee ll respond to intra articular injections but there is always chances of infection but in case of severe arthritis injections won't help.
The efficacy of injection depends on the stage of osteoarthritis various variety of injections also available
Can give a try of injections but it's only temporary in case it works if it's more than 8 years her present condition may respond with replacement better
Get physiotherapy sessions from a good experienced physio I don't see any reason why it can't be managed through strengthening and stretching sessions with adjunct therapeutic modalities.
