About shadow teaching
My granddaughter is 5 years old. 20 days back she fractured her leg. Doctor has put pop and she is completely on bed rest. She is not able to walk or do any other activities. For engaging we are giving her activity sheets. My question is last year in school they said to keep shadow teaching for her as she is not sitting in a place  during class hours and also she is not writing. My daughter and son in law are from Chennai and they got transferred to Mumbai where she has got language pblm. She knows tamil and presently we are teaching her English. She doesn't know Hindi as everyone talks either in hindi or Marathi. Doctor said not to send her to school for 1 month during fracture healing process. My question is do shadow teacher come to home and teach her as she may miss her school and vant cop up with the lessons taught. What all does a shadow teacher teach as we dont know who is a shadow teacher and what all they teach. Also she has turned very adamant nowadays. Please guide us

She seems to be on epilepsy medications, you should identify the root cause of epilepsy for her and that involves left hemisphere in right handed individuals and responsible for language. Due to her condition it is natural for her unable to activate her cerebral activity and is an medical condition. Would recommend you enable her for sound healing at the earliest and have the EEG graph validate the hemisphere impacted and that language receptors need to be identified. Shadow teacher and her profile shall change based on the same as gross motor skills of language via Games hand and board based only and no electronic gadgets shall be required by her.
Next Steps
Enable sound healing at the earliest for her and have EEG left hemisphere investigated
Health Tips
empathy, love, compassion for her journey as she is requiring all the help at the earliest.

Hi A shadow teacher is someone who is trained to handle children with special needs. They’re used in school setting as a shadow teacher - meaning doing sane activities as a teacher but restricted to one child. She helps the child follow what is taught in class, write HW and other notes etc. Some children who need food and toilet assistance, these teachers may or may not help them unless an agreement is made regarding their duties. Same goes for them coming at home. However usually people keep a separate special educator for home sessions. If u need any more services you will need to make an arrangement with the shadow teacher and check what all she is willing to do with additional fee. Hope this helps.

Shadow Teacher means having an “additional support” in mainstream classrooms for children with different needs and abilities. They work hand-in-hand with lead teachers to bridge the gap between the specific needs of these children and the resources available within the regular classroom setting. Firstly, it’s required by the school to have 2 teachers for such young children in school, one lead and other shadow, so that the children who aren’t able to keep up with the lessons in class, can catch up on the lessons with the help of the shadow teacher. Preschool teachers are especially trained in ways that they can understand different learning preferences and styles of each little kid, so that they can help each child based on their specific needs. Since lead teacher may not be able to do that, there is shadow or secondary teacher, school counselor, special educator who can help in understanding the basic concepts being taught in class. So looking for a school that has such facilities for easing the transition for the child can be of great help. Shadow teacher doesn’t teach, she helps the child understand & learn what is taught in class better, by understanding their learning style & bridging the gap in early years. Secondly, children don’t learn by preaching but by example, play & observation. For the child to become comfortable with the new language, the family members around her would need to also embrace the new language at home. And make it a play. She knows only Tamil & Hindi because that’s probably the language you all talk in or teach her at home. Plus, Giving her activity sheets, while she is on bed rest could easily bore & overwhelm her (hence not paying attention or becoming adamant). Make sure that while she is on bed rest make it enjoyable for her, watch cartoons shows or movies in Hindi/marathi, learn the basics of the new language (Hindi/marathi) with her & make it into a game, atleast in addition to the activity sheets. You can also contact her class teacher & take the lesson plan & activities planned from her, and plan activities for your daughter around that. And if the parents are busy, search for in call teachers to come home for your grand daughter. (Ask class teacher for reference or help in case she knows anyone) Third & lastly, your child isn’t adamant, she is uncomfortable with something & trying to communicate that. She is not sitting in one place in class or not writing because there is some challenge she is facing wrt interest in what’s being taught, the way it’s being taught + children this age have lot of energy that they want to direct only towards play. Understand your child’s challenges rather than labelling her to help her better.
Next Steps
1. Look for a school that provides additional support system (show or secondary teacher, counselor, special educator). 2. Speak in the language you want to teach her at home, in conversations, learn the language with her & make it a play. Watch shows or movies together. 3. Ask class teacher for what she plans to teach in next one month, ask for activities planned & take reference for any teacher or resource person that could come teach her at home. 4. Talk to the child regarding the challenges they are facing at school, understand from them what’s happening instead of judging/labelling or telling what’s happening or whats wrong.

Hi! Sorry to hear that your granddaughter is bed ridden due to the fracture. There are several issues to be considered before deciding on a course of action: 1."Last year in school they said to keep a shadow teacher for her".What made the school to give such an advice? Did they diagnose her with ADHD?If so, did they tell you about it? If so, how did they diagnose? If the child is unable to stay in one place and is inattentive, please take her to a pediatrician or child specialist, for a proper diagnosis after she recovers from the fracture. A shadow teacher is a person who sits beside a child with special needs (such as a child diagnosed with ADHD, autism etc) in the classroom and assists the child on a one to one basis in a usual normal  classroom setting when the teacher is teaching. The shadow teacher can be the mother, a relative, a volunteer, social worker etc. 2. Your granddaughter is 5 years old, mother tongue is Tamil, now living in Mumbai, studying in an English medium school?, cant speak Hindi or Marathi. Please allow her to play with Hindi and Marathi speaking children in the neighbourhood for an hour daily. Within three months, she will learn to speak both Hindi and Marathi fluently. You dont need to pay any tuition fee for that! 3. Presently you are teaching her English. How do you do it when she is in bed? Remember she is just 5 years old and she is not preparing for NEET exams now! Please don't put academic pressure on her for one month. However, her family members can informally teach her English during this period by talking to her in English. 4. After her recovery from the fracture, the teachers in her school will have to show extra patience, care and compassion to help her catch up with the rest of the class. 5.What she needs now is emotional support from all the family members.

Hi, With the right support and resources provided your granddaughter can continue her education and improve while she is healing from her fracture. A shadow teacher is paraprofessional or an aide, provides one-on-one support to a child in a classroom setting, particularly for children with special educational needs or behavioral challenges. Given your granddaughter's present situation here are a few suggestions- Consult the School to recommend a shadow and resources for home-based support. Establish a daily routine with the shadow teacher with clear goals like her academic progress, behavior management, language skills including breaks, and fun time to keep your granddaughter engaged and happy. To help manage her behaviour you could try positive reinforcement to encourage good behaviour. Listen to her feelings and concerns, and provide reassurance and support. To be away from school and her usual activities can be challenging for a young child. Give her the emotional support and companionship it will help her cope with the stress of her injury and the changes in her routine.

Hi, A shadow teacher is an individual who assists a student with special needs, such as your granddaughter, in the classroom. They provide support and guidance to help the student stay focused, engaged, and on track with their learning. Since your granddaughter is not currently able to attend school due to her fractured leg, it may be possible to hire a shadow teacher to come to your home and provide one-on-one teaching and support. A shadow teacher can help your granddaughter with a variety of tasks, including keeping up with lessons and assignments, practicing writing and language skills, and providing additional educational support tailored to her needs. They can also help with language barriers and assist in teaching her English as she transitions from Tamil. To find a shadow teacher, you may want to reach out to local tutoring services or educational organizations that specialize in working with children with special needs. They can help match you with a qualified individual who has the skills and experience to support your granddaughter during her recovery and beyond. In terms of your granddaughter's behavior, it's not uncommon for children to become more stubborn or defiant when they are dealing with a difficult situation, such as being confined to bed rest due to an injury. It's important to be patient and understanding with her, while also setting clear boundaries and expectations. Consistent routines, positive reinforcement, and plenty of encouragement can help her navigate this challenging time and stay engaged with her learning.
