A small bump near an old surgery scar, even years after surgery, is not necessarily a serious problem. It can sometimes be due to scar tissue, a small suture reaction, or an incisional hernia (a weakness in the abdominal wall at the previous surgery site). However, it is difficult to identify the cause without examining it. If the swelling is new, increasing in size, painful, hard, red, or does not go back in when lying down, she should get it examined by a surgeon. An ultrasound may be advised if needed.
Next Steps
Please consult a general surgeon for a physical examination. Avoid repeatedly pressing or massaging the lump until it is assessed.
Health Tips
Seek urgent medical attention if there is severe pain, vomiting, abdominal distension, redness over the swelling, fever, or a lump that suddenly becomes hard and cannot be pushed back in.

Greetings new bump near an old surgical scar could mean a recurring hernia or an incisional hernia. It could also be a harmless buildup of deep scar tissue or a minor suture reaction. If your child is completely pain-free and comfortable, it is unlikely to be an immediate danger. Please schedule a routine physical exam with their pediatric surgeon to confirm a proper diagnosis.
