9th months old baby cough
Dear Doctor,
I’m writing about my 9-month-old son, who has had a cough for the past 3 weeks. He coughs a few times during the day, but it seems more frequent at night and early in the morning. The cough sounds wet/productive.
He took Ascoril LS Junior syrup 10 days as prescribed by our doctor. There were periods of slight improvement, but the cough has continued and still comes and goes.
He does not have a fever or any other symptoms. His feeding, sleep, and activity levels are normal.
Could you please advise on the next steps or whether he should be examined again?

At 9 months of age, a long-standing cough that is worse in the morning is often allergic in nature. In allergic conditions, secretions are usually watery and may drain backward (post-nasal drip), which can trigger coughing.
Ascoril is an expectorant, and the ambroxol component may sometimes increase coughing by loosening secretions. Since there is no fever, the cough does not appear to be infective or truly wet.
It may be better to stop the syrup and consider alternative remedies or a different combination of medications. However, a clinical re-examination is advisable.
At 9 months of age, physiological hypertrophy (such as mild adenoidal enlargement) can be present and is normal.

Hello,As per age group and symptoms baby seems to have Allergic cough ,Ascoril LS syrup will help temporarily but not completely.And cough syrup any how can not be taken for long term as you already taken for 10 days.Next try nebulizer and for this take doctor opinion before starting nebulization and Try to avoid allergens like dust as it can be triggering factor.
