Based on this, passing blood and mucus signifies localized inflammation, injury, or severe irritation within the lower intestinal lining. Given his background of formula changes, this flare-up could point to an allergic cross-reaction like Soy Protein-Induced Enterocolitis/Proctitis, a newly triggered allergic reaction to the proteins in newly introduced solid foods (such as wheat/gluten), or an acute infectious gastroenteritis. However, for a proper diagnosis and to evaluate his hydration safely, a physical examination by a pediatrician is required.
Health Tips
To accurately evaluate your premature baby's severe gut reaction, safely review his recent medication profile side-by-side with his weight trends, and provide an immediate pediatric prescription for specialized recovery formulas or anti-infective therapies, please book a direct consultation session via my Practo profile."
The bloody mucus motions after introducing new foods are most likely food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP). Premature babies have immature gut immune systems and are significantly more prone to food protein allergies â your baby already showed this pattern when switched from cow's milk formula to soy. Introducing multiple new foods (banana, carrot, and wheat) together makes it difficult to identify which is the culprit, but wheat (gluten) is a common allergen and is particularly risky in babies with a pre-existing sensitive gut. The prior antibiotic use also disrupted gut flora, making the gut wall more reactive.
Next Steps
Stop all newly introduced solid foods immediately and revert to soy formula only until the stools normalize. Once settled, reintroduce single foods one at a time with a 5-7 day gap between each new food. Avoid wheat until at least 8-9 months. Consult a pediatric gastroenterologist for proper allergy evaluation. Please consult me directly on Practo for a detailed evaluation.
