5 mths old ( corrected age 3 mths ) baby
My baby was born premie and currently she is 5 mths old and corrected age is 3 mths. She was born 10 weeks early and her birth weight was 1229 gms. Since birth there hasn't been much issue apart from slow weight gain. In NICu she was gaining between 150-200gms per week as she was on fortified breast milk. When she was given discharge she weighed 2490 gms at 39 weeks. Post that she did breastfeeding( shallow latch) and expressed breastmilk. Week 1 post discharge she only gained 80gms.So paediatrician suggested to fortify her breastmilk with formula. We started giving her 150 ml of fortified breastmilk and she in some weeks gained betn 150-200gms.Post that I wanted her to be on complete breastfeeding and under guidance of lactation who suggested to stop formula and only breastfeed baby on demand. (Before this baby use to feed every 3 hours). 1st week only breastfeeding- no increase in weight, 2nd week expressed breastmilk top up- 120 gms and 3rd week only 100 gms. What could be the issue

Her length, head circumference and development is as important as weight. So more details are needed. If weight gain is inadequate, then formula is needed. Also we have to rule out other issues.
Next Steps
please visit a pediatrician with all records physically

The reason could be inadequacy of feeding . Also ensure that you feed the child from 1breast completely before shifting and latching to the other one. The initial milk is mainly water based to quench the thirst of your baby and the later milk or the hind milk is the one for weight gain.so ensure proper latching and feeding.
Next Steps
also consult your pediatrician to add supplements to her for overall growth.
Health Tips
beware of symptoms like exhaustion while feeding, excessive sweating etc as these could point to underlying other systemic abnormalities sometimes

The primary reason can be either decreased milk output or the shallow latch as mentioned across. Also it’s better to see, assess and comment for any other reasons that could be possible ma’am.
Next Steps
Please get your milk output quantified as well as latching assessed.

Baby having low birth weight, that’s why babies muscle power for sucking is slightly weak that’s why he is not able to take breastfeeding properly so as per advice of your doctor, giving the formula milk for some days is the better option Baby required more energy for sucking the breast milk that reason reason for not getting the weight

100 gm weight gain in one week is good Preterm babies usually gain less weight. We just have to keep her weight monitoring and plotting it on growth chart You can continue breast feeding and plus top up expressed milk with each feed. You do not need to worry about it.
