2-3 month old cough
I have had a tickling dry cough for more than 2 months. There is almost no sputum or only negligible mucus. Initially my doctor prescribed Clavam 625 (1-1-1 for 5 days) and Ambroxol syrup 30 mg, 5 ml (1-1-1 for 5 days), but the cough did not improve much.  Later I was prescribed Levocetirizine 5 mg (once at night for 10 days). I also took Phensedyl DX cough syrup on my own. After this, the cough improved by about 80%.  However, occasionally the cough still occurs, especially when I run or sometimes after eating tiffin. Ioften feel as if mucus is stuck in my throat and there is a heavy sensation in the throat. If I cough repeatedly, the cough increases, but if I suppress it, it gradually settles down. Overall, the cough frequency is very low now, but when I take a deep breath, I feel a tickling sensation in my throat. After completing Levocetirizine 5 mg, my cough has slightly increased. Earlier I was about 80% recovered, but now it feels around 70% recovery. Please advise.

This is a chronic dry cough (>8 weeks) that has partially responded to anti-allergic treatment, which strongly points toward: • Upper Airway Cough Syndrome (post-nasal drip) • Possible Allergic Rhinitis • Mild airway hyperreactivity (cough triggered on deep breath/exertion) Clues: • Tickling sensation in throat • Feeling of mucus stuck (but minimal sputum) • Worse with running / after food • Improved with levocetirizine → then worsened after stopping
Next Steps
• Restart anti-allergic therapy: – Levocetirizine 5 mg at night for 2–3 weeks • Add: – Nasal steroid spray (very effective for post-nasal drip) – Steam inhalation • If cough persists: – Consider trial of anti-reflux treatment (like Pantoprazole) • If still not resolving → Pulmonology/ENT review (to rule out cough variant asthma)
Health Tips
• Avoid dust, cold air, and allergens • Do not repeatedly try to clear throat (worsens irritation cycle) • Stay hydrated → thins secretions • Avoid late-night heavy meals (reflux trigger) • Warm fluids (honey, ginger) can soothe throat ⚠️ Red flags: • Weight loss, fever • Blood in sputum • Persistent worsening cough ⸻
