The Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata (I-NK) is a 210-bed not-for-profit neurosciences hospital on Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road in central Kolkata. It is accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), with NABL accreditation for its laboratory, and was founded by the neurosurgeon Dr. Robin Sengupta to address the shortage of neurological care in eastern India.The institute treats adults and children across neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychiatry and neuro-rehabilitation, covering stroke, head injuries, spine disorders, epilepsy and psychiatric conditions. Neurospine and spine surgery, paediatric neurology, neuropsychology, clinical psychology, and adolescent and child psychiatry run as distinct services, alongside geriatric psychiatry for older patients.Diagnostic work includes electromyography (EMG) and neuropathy assessment, which test how nerves and muscles are functioning and are central to diagnosing nerve damage, along with laboratory testing including antinuclear antibody assays used in the investigation of autoimmune disease.The institute is modelled on NIMHANS, Bengaluru, and is twinned with the Regional Neurosciences Centre in Newcastle in the United Kingdom. As a registered not-for-profit, its surplus income is reinvested in facilities and research rather than distributed.The hospital runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which matters in neurosciences where stroke and head injury outcomes depend on how quickly treatment begins.I-NK is located at 185/1, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road, Kolkata 700017, near the Lower Circular Road cemetery.
