Safdarjung Hospital is a government tertiary hospital at VMMC Medical College, Ansari Nagar, Delhi 110016, entered from gate no 7 on the Ansari Nagar West side. It was founded in 1942 during the Second World War as a base hospital for the allied forces and was taken over by the Government of India in 1954 under the Ministry of Health. It started with 204 beds and now has 1,531 authorised beds.The hospital is a multi-disciplinary tertiary institution that has regularly upgraded its diagnostic and therapeutic facilities across its specialities, and it treats patients from Delhi, the neighbouring states and neighbouring countries. Clinical departments include general surgery and bariatric surgery, cancer surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology covering asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as well as paediatric pulmonology, cosmetic and plastic surgery, and psychogeriatrics.It has been a centre for postgraduate training and teaching since 1962. Its clinical faculty formed part of the University College of Medical Sciences, to which it was attached until 1990; after UCMS shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital at Shahdara, Delhi, the hospital continued to provide postgraduate training in specialities and super specialities and to train interns from institutions in India and abroad.
