Lately I have been feeling a bit too down, and restless, like never before. I'm a bit confused on whom to consult - a psychologist or psychiatrist?

Hi! Thanks for reaching out. Both Psychiatrists and Psychologists are mental health professionals. However, Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have done their MD in Psychiatry. They treat mood and emotional disorders and are licensed to prescribe medicines. Psychologists undergo their training in psychotherapeutic techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Counseling Skills, etc. Though Psychologists cannot prescribe medications, the emphasis of their training is more so towards treatment through therapy. Thereby, depending on the nature of difficulty you may choose a professional, and if the need be, both a Psychologist or a Psychiatrist may refer/collaborate with each other.
Next Steps
Consult a Psychologist first, and ask them if they feel that a Psychiatric referral may be needed.

You may consult a psychologist. They will help you understand where the restlessness is coming from and help you with the what needs to be done next. Based on your condition, they will inform you if you need to consult a psychiatrist.

Hi,   Feeling down and restless might be due to COVID-19 pandemic but may not be limited to that. Counseling psychologist may help you if you think you can sit for counseling for 30 min to an hour at least once in a week. Incase if your emotions are overpowering you and you think that I cannot sit for that long better to consult psychiatrist.

You have taken the first and the most important step towards healing and recovery - that is, recognizing the fact that your functionality as an individual has taken a beating and that you need help. Kindly ask yourself to what extent has this latest predicament been affecting you? If you are a student, are you able to reasonably focus on your studies, complete your assignments on time, etc.? Are you able to go about the daily tasks of waking up sufficiently early, eating healthy, accomplish your daily goals, sleep and rest sufficiently well? If the answer to the above is yes and you need to address your disturbing state of mind, kindly consult a counselor or a psychologist of your choice. Take care.
