If mild, avoid unnecessary medicine and just give steam inhalations for cold and cough and decongestant nasal drops for nasal block or increased cough on lying down. Use paracetamol for fever if required. Place your ear against his chest or back and if you hear whistling sounds in the breathing, then he's probably asthmatic, and requires proper physical examination and investigation for further management.
