Food is the best medicine! Considering the age and being a woman, you may want to check her calcium and vitamin D levels. If, your  calcium  is low find out which food items you need to consume more. That's your 1st step. Strong muscles support the joint.  No matter  which medications you take, if the muscles are not  strong enough, the pain will not  go away.  Medications may mask the pain in the short run, but will also present you with serious side effects.
Next Steps
Go to your nearest physiotherapist /occupational therapist to learn what  specific  exercises do you need. Therapy should be the 1st recommendation given by all doctors, unfortunately that's not the case.
Health Tips
Even post surgery, you'll need at least 4- 8 weeks of therapy to get back to your routine. Why not try therapy before surgery!
