In everyday conversations we often hear the word depression, depressed quite often. But this does not actually imply the medical meaning of the word. This might give birth to several questions in your head at the moment. People often feel sad, blue, or ‘depressed’ from time to time. These feelings are usually short lived, and do not interfere with daily life.Clinical depression on the other hand, is a serious medical condition that affects the mind and body. There are many different types of clinical depression.Events in one's life cause some, and chemical changes in the brain cause others. The various types of depression are Major depressive Dysthymia Bipolar disorder Seasonal affective disorder Post partum depression. Major depressive disorder, manifested by a combination of symptoms that interferes with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat and enjoy once pleasurable activities. If the symptoms last for 2 years or longer, it's called persistent depressive disorder also known as dysthymia. The person who suffers from this disorder must not have gone for more than 2 months without experiencing two or more of its symptoms. These symptoms are sometimes caused due to the direct physiological effects of use or abuse of a substance such as alcohol, drugs or medication or a general medical condition, they must also cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, educational, or other important areas of functioning. Another type of depressive illness is bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is characterized by cycling mood changes that is severe highs (mania) and lows (depression), often with periods of normal mood in between. These mood switches are sometimes dramatic and rapid, but most times gradual. There are further four basic types of bipolar disorder. An unusual type of depression is seasonal affective disorder. This is a depression starting in the winter months, usually stemming from low natural sunlight and often lifting in the summer months.Other than these, depression may be associated or rather is a co morbidity of other conditions - For example, psychosis and in postpartum conditions. There are two different types of major depressive disorder with psychotic features. In both, delusions and hallucinations are present, but the affected person may experience major depressive disorder with mood-congruent psychotic features or with mood-incongruent psychotic features. Many new moms experience the "postpartum baby blues" after childbirth, which commonly include mood swings, crying spells, anxiety and difficulty sleeping. Baby blues typically begin within the first two to three days after delivery, and may last for up to two weeks.Postpartum depression isn't a character flaw or a weakness,it's simply a complication of giving birth. If you feel you are depressed or have a suspicion that an individual you know is victim to this condition then a visit to a psychiatrist is strongly advised. To determine the kind of depression an individual has, there are various screening tests which a psychiatrist may subject the person to.
