Turbinates Hypertrophy. Should i do now?

Hi, I am Dr. Atul Kumar Nimawat MS ENT. Yes, you’re absolutely right — after septoplasty and turbinectomy, it’s quite uncommon for patients to feel that their turbinate area swells again. This can happen due to several reasons, like: • Post-operative inflammation: Even after surgery, mucosal tissues react by swelling as part of the healing process. • Compensatory hypertrophy: Sometimes, if too much resection happens on one side, the opposite turbinate can hypertrophy to compensate. • Persistent allergies or irritants: Underlying allergic rhinitis or environmental irritants can cause turbinate mucosa to swell again. • Inadequate reduction: In some cases, the initial turbinectomy may not have been sufficient, and some turbinate tissue remains active. • Empty Nose Syndrome (ENS) mimicking congestion: Rarely, patients feel blocked even when the airway is objectively wide due to altered airflow sensation.

Usually, management depends on the cause — could be medical (like steroids, antihistamines, nasal saline irrigation) or rarely, revision surgery.
