Peeling off of tongue can be due to a painful ulcer. The causes are twofold: systemic and local. Systemic cause can be vitamin C deficiency which can be treated by Vitamin C administration under monitoring by a medical professional. Local cause can be sharp tooth surface or decayed tooth with sharp edges. In this case you need to go for dental treatment to eliminate the local causes if any. In addition to vitamin C tablets you can also use an antiseptic gel like Dentogel or Dologel or Metrogyl DG gel
Next Steps
Get yourself clinically evaluated by a dental professional to find out the actual cause and get the the appropriate treatment

Smooth areas of the tongue may be related to injury (food burn) or if you’ve eaten a lot of acidic or spicy food lately or a nutritional deficiency of iron, folate, or vitamin B12. A smooth tongue can also result from the use of dentures. When this happens, your body goes into a defensive state and gets rid of the damaged top layer that it doesn’t need anymore. The layer of cells underneath aren’t quite used to being exposed once the damaged layer peels off, so you might experience a bit of discomfort, especially if you continue to eat acidic or spicy food. Keep your diet on the bland side for a few days and you should be just fine. Treatment is dependent upon the underlying cause of the tongue skin peeling, for now you can have vitamin C tablets and B-Complex tablets. The following steps may help: - You can suck on an ice cube which will reduce the burning sensation and give you relief - Salt water gargle thrice a day with lukewarm water will give some relief. - Avoid spicy, oily, deep fried and junk food - Avoid coffee, tea and carbonated drinks - Avoid alcohol consumption and smoking if you have the habit - Brush your teeth regularly and maintain oral hygiene If the problem persists or worsens visit a dentist
