Hello , it can be anything from a ingrown nail to a fungal infection of nail bed, if possible send a pic of the thumb in concern. It might occur due to excessive exposure to mositure , or nail biting or even a paoriasis of nail . If pain is in excess u can start a painkiller and consult a general surgeon. If found to have fungal infection may have to start antifungal medicines. Its completely treatable need not be worried
