Thumb lock
Hello sir/mam...my mother is having pain at the base of the thumb since 2years. Earlier she couldn't bend her thumb backwards properly and there was clicking or popping sound. Also while doing any activities the pain increased. There was restricted mobility and thumb would get locked in straight position. This happened after my mother had fallen on ground accidentally . No x-ray done till now Doctor prescribed no medicine only asked to soak hand in warm water. Followed instructions of doctor but no improvement. The condition deteriorated few days ago as now she is even not able to bend thumb backwards at all. It can be bent forwards but gets stuck or locked up in straight position most of the time. She is also suffering from diabetes since 20years. Plz suggest what to do.

It is trigger thumb. Best solution is to do surgery under local anaesthetic. Temporary injection might help in the thumb. Consult your dr.

It is a locked trigger thumb. Ask her to rest her hand completely especially the thumb by giving a thumb spica splint. Once the pain and this episode settles she will require exercises. Also ask her not to put any pressure on the thumb.
