Hello, I am Dr. Atul Kumar Nimawat, MS (ENT).
As you have been experiencing throat pain and cold symptoms for the past three days, there are several possible causes that we consider:
Infectious Causes:
• Viral infections (most common)
• Common cold (Rhinovirus, Coronavirus)
• Influenza (Flu)
• Infectious mononucleosis (Epstein-Barr virus)
• Bacterial infections
• Streptococcal pharyngitis (Strep throat)
• Diphtheria (rare due to widespread vaccination)
• Fungal infections
• Oral candidiasis (more common in immunocompromised individuals)
Non-Infectious Causes:
• Allergies
• Allergic rhinitis causing post-nasal drip and throat irritation
• Environmental factors
• Exposure to smoke, pollutants, or dry air
• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
• Acid reflux leading to throat irritation
• Voice strain
• Excessive talking, yelling, or singing
• Trauma or foreign body
• Mechanical injury to the throat
Other Causes:
• Tumors (rare, but should be considered, especially in persistent or chronic cases)
• Autoimmune conditions
• Such as Sjögren’s syndrome
• Medication-induced irritation
• For example, inhaler use causing local throat irritation
