Hello, Bipolar disorder is characterized by episodes in which the patient's mood and activity levels are significantly disturbed, this disturbance consisting on some occasions of an elevation of mood and increased energy and activity (mania or hypomania), and on others of a lowering of mood and decreased energy and activity (depression). Characteristically, recovery is usually complete between episodes. There can be episodes of mania without depression episode.

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness marked by extreme shifts in mood or mood swings ranging from depressive lows to manic highs. Symptoms can include an extremely elevated mood called mania or episodes of depression. Manic episodes may include symptoms such as high energy, reduced need for sleep and loss of touch with reality. Depressive episodes may include symptoms such as low energy, low motivation and loss of interest in daily activities. Mood episodes last days to months at a time and may also be associated with suicidal thoughts. Treatment is usually lifelong and often involves a combination of medications and psychotherapy. If you're diagnosed with the condition, it's important to talk to your psychiatrist so you're fully involved and aware of the decisions about your treatment and care.
