Bowel loops are mostly small intestinal folds which normally contains fluid, food matter and air. When diameter of these hollow tubes increases, it is then mentioned as distended. There are several reasons for bowel distension: When consumed Food is contaminated Ileus (temporary slowing down of intestines). Can be due to low potassium levels or recent anesthesia, abdominal surgery or infection. Any infection of intestines like gastro enteritis, typhoid, or just diarrhea Any bowel obstruction due to hernia, scar tissue called adhesions Idiopathic (no evident reason). Further evaluation will be needed if you are facing difficulty because of that bowel distension. A surgeon or a gastroenterologist will be a good option to consult. Best wishes
