Hello
At 3 years, most children should be able to:
Speak in 3–4 word sentences
Ask questions
Use 200–250 words or more
Be understood by strangers most of the time
If a 3-year-old is not speaking at all or has very limited speech, it requires early evaluation and support.
Causes:
Speech delay (isolated delay, often improves with therapy)
Hearing problems (common cause; fluid in ears, recurrent infections)
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
Intellectual disability
Lack of stimulation (less interaction, screen exposure)
Neurological causes (rare)
Does your child watch mobile, TV, or tablet for long hours? Excess screen time can delay speech. We recommend no more than 30–60 minutes of high-quality screen time per day under supervision.
Next Steps
Hearing test (BERA or OAE if needed)
Developmental screening – to assess understanding, interaction, play
Speech and language evaluation
Referral to a developmental pediatrician or child psychologist
Health Tips
Talk to the child slowly, clearly, and regularly
Name objects during routine activities
Encourage pointing and nonverbal communication
Avoid mobile screens
Read simple picture books aloud daily
