SSRI +SNRI are commonly prescribed together these days
Since your symptoms were not fully remitting with just Escitalopram it is worthwhile to try another category antidepressant

I understand your concern. It might seems like a lot but in fact it's not uncommon to prescribe more than one antidepressant. They are of different categories targeting different symptoms. They don't have significant interactions between one another. You can rest easy.
You have mentioned that you've been on medication for years now. Have you been irregular during this time?
It's possible to tapper the medication and stop it and still maintain well. However you will have to be diligent in taking your meds regularly and have followup.
