Migraine is one issue where multiple kind of medicines can used as “CONTROL” therapy, I.e. to prevent attacks. These include anti-epileptics, anti-depressants, blood pressure control medicines, so on and so forth. Their side effect profile is also myriad. Most of them cause excess sleep and weight gain. None cause sleeplessness. Some cause night mares.
Medicines used to “TERMINATE” an attack include some of NSAID group, which can cause Edema and foot swelling in the long run.
The pathophysiology pf migraine is complex and poorly understood, hence no “targeted” therapy is available for “control” of attacks. All the medicines currently available are primarily of a different class but have good effect to control migraine, hence used for that.
We don’t have a specific duration of treatment. For some we can taper off the medicines after few months of controls. others may require lifelong.
