Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by delusions, hallucinations, disorganized behavior, negative symptoms and impaired functioning, lack of judgment leading to significant legal implications in the context of marriage in India.
A marriage can be annulled if one spouse was incapable of giving valid consent due to unsoundness of mind at the time of marriage, or a divorce can be sought if the spouse suffers from schizophrenia to such an extent that cohabitation is unreasonable. Cases where the illness significantly affects marital obligations or endangers the other spouse’s well-being can lead to the dissolution of marriage.
Having said so Courts often require medical evidence and expert testimony to establish the diagnosis and its severity in court and so re evaluating patient for diagnosis is a protocol in court proceedings.
Schizophrenia’s prognosis varies and depends on various factors like individual vulnerability, past history, family history, response to treatment, age of onset, presenting symptoms etc. but usually has a chronic course.
About treatment, with an established diagnosis and presenting symptoms, treatment plan can be curated by the consulting psychiatrist.
Hello
First important thing is that schizophrenia is a severe mental health issues and can have alot of caregiver burder. If you really want to help your friend, you need to bring her for consultation. Just leaving a message and asking randomly for medication won't help her at all. So important thing is ideally she should be taken to a psychiatrist in person and if not possible video consultation can be done with the patient so as to have the diagnosis properly. Once we have diagnosis we can according manange the patient.
