Hello doctor. My mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia about 6-7 yrs ago. She was put on a light medication. It was ok for sometime after which she refused to take the medication, accusing everyone of trying to prove that she is mad.

Schizophrenia is a complex and chronic psychiatric disorder. It can be definitely improved by proper treatment. Poor drug compliance can worsen an improved pt. Hence kindly consult a psychiatrist immediately.

Check her Haemoglobin and thyroid levels too

Hello, In such a scenario as described by you here. I would strongly suggest and recommend that you please seek a consultation with a psychiatrist near you. A psychiatrist may be better able to explain the need of medication to her. Alternatively she may be put on depot antipsychotic drugs which will require administration once a month or fortnight and hence will reduce daily struggle and prodding required for medication administration. As a last option she may require a brief hospitalization for treatment, and after initial treatment she may be more willing to take medication and understand the need for the same.
