His kidney functions are fine which is a good thing.However his HbA1c is high and he must start medication for that.

What the nephrologist meant was that no medicines are required for kidneys as kidney function is adequate.
That doesn't mean he doesn't require Anti diabetic medication.
At HbA1C of 8.4 he certainly requires medication for sugar control ( apart from diet mgmt and exercise)
