Antidepressants need to be continued for a considerable period of time, even after the mood is improved. This is needed to strengthen the brain circuits & to decrease the risk of relapse. Relapse ( recurrence of symptoms) is quite common in depression. Any medication, even those for fever, infection, pain can have side effects. Do we avoid taking medication in physical illness for the fear of side effects? If you are facing side effects, discuss with your doctor, who can adjust the dosages, change to a different medication or wait & watch (as some side effects decrease with time, as the body adjusts to the medication)
